Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Right? That’s what we were always told when we were little. Maybe it was just mom’s way of getting us to eat before school, but the thought has a LOT of merit. There is so much importance of breakfast, especially ensuring high quality, nutritious and healthy breakfasts.
Food is fuel. We know that. And, like everything else that needs fuel, we run better; when our body has enough fuel (nutrition), we are more effective at work, in the gym, chasing our family around.
Right?
One easy way to improve your health is making sure you get a healthy, nutritious breakfast.
Let’s break down the importance of breakfast
1. Importance of Eating Breakfast to Refuel
Starting your day with breakfast means that you replenish your energy stores after the overnight fast (breakfast means breaking your fast). After sleeping, your body uses up the energy stores, essentially meaning you are running on fumes. You wouldn’t try to drive across town when the fuel light in your car turns on, so why try to get through a day with the same premise? Eating breakfast refuels your fuel tank and gets you through the day!
2. Boost your metabolism
When you are in a state of fasting, your metabolism slows. Therefore, having breakfast each day maintains and can even “jump start” your metabolism.
3. Eat Breakfast to Prevent Overeating
Starting your day with breakfast can also prevent you from overeating in high calorie meals later in the day. Often when we overindulge, it is because we are hungry from depriving our body of nutrition. That hunger can lead to mood swings and trouble concentrating and skipping meals, especially breakfast, can make all of this worse.
Do you see the Importance of Breakfast?
Hopefully now you have a few more ideas about the importance of breakfast.
Doesn’t it make sense to start our day with something loaded with nutrition, providing your body with the nutrients (or energy) to thrive through all the day offers?
I think so. How about you?

I think so. How about you?
Do you start your day with breakfast? If not, I strongly recommend you try it. If you do eat breakfast then I have an even more important question. It is one thing to start your day with breakfast. But what does your breakfast look like?
Is it high in protein, or loaded with processed carbohydrates and fats?
Is it balanced in minerals and vitamins you need throughout the day or is it laced with sugar that will only make you crash in 10 minutes and result in mood swings and cravings?
Focus on the: WHAT
We talked about the importance of breakfast. WHAT you eat for that breakfast is equally important!
It will do no good, and likely cause you more issues, reaching for a nutrient poor donut or a bagel with a generous smear of cream cheese instead of something that has value. Starting the day by feeding your body empty calories versus food that is balanced in protein, carbs, fat, minerals, and vitamins will leave you feeling hungry, you’ll get fatigued sooner, and your body will start craving high-fat, processed foods all while being moody and intolerant in the eyes of your co-workers. Overtime, these habits lead to weight gain.
Don’t worry! I think we have all been in a place where breakfast seems too difficult: “We don’t have enough time, we don’t know what to make for breakfast, etc.”
That’s why I make sure I start my day with a breakfast smoothie. I’m not really a big breakfast eater. Don’t get me wrong, I love a hearty portion of bacon, scrambled eggs, or even better, my dad’s omelette, but I never have an appetite when my alarm goes off at 5:30. I’ve never had the appeal to jump out of bed, run to the kitchen, and eat. When I eat breakfast, I wait about 1 hour after I wake up and then have a lovely breakfast smoothie. Having something portable, like a smoothie, is also convenient if you take public transport as well.
What my Breakfast Looks Like:
Breakfast smoothies are easy to drink in the morning and I feel like my energy meter just shoots up as I’m drinking the smoothie! I have so much energy. And because it’s gluten free, dairy free, and soy free, I don’t have to think twice about breakfast. The addition of fresh berries and fruit means that my smoothie is bursting with flavour!
If you want to start feeling better, and jump-start your health and wellness journey with one less meal to worry about each day, let me know and I can set up a call with you!
